Katsuma's book

I read the latest book entitled, 'Intelligent Production of Reading' written by Kazuyo Katsuma, who is the most impressive female writer this year. It was this January when I first noticed her at a bookstore where a lot of her new book, 'A Method for Intelligent Production,' were piled up in a wagon. The reason why I was attracted to the book was its title, which is similar to that of an old book entitled, 'A Method for Intelligent Production.' And, the book has several colored pages showing her bike, laptop computer, MP3 player, etc. I was very surprised with her positive energy to do a lot of things, as I read the book. She recommended readers to do like her. Although I thought not just anyone can do a lot of excellent work, study, and physical training as she does, I started to read a lot of books (five books per week), which may show me the secret to success. And, I also started to go to a gym and take a personal lesson of physical training. She also claimed that 'give and take' is not good enough and that give & give & give & give & give (the fifth power of give) is the key to accomplish something important. And she recommended us to write a blog and books. Then, I started to write a blog, although I have already written three books. Now, I'm always thinking about how to do something new and make a difference.

What a great inspiration. Everyone needs to find their inspiration to make their lives better! I think you found yours. Nicely done. (sarah)

The book written by Makoto Ito emphasizes the importance of concentrating your power on one thing. The author runs the 'Ito Makoto Juku', a school for people who want to pass the bar examination, the most difficult examination in Japan. He claims that the power to focus on one thing is the most effective method to make the impossible possible. To focus on one thing, you have to put aside other things. However, you may have many complicated tasks to do. If so, you should divide your work into individual simple tasks and perform the tasks one by one. Using this technique, you can get many tasks done. Even though you are going to take an entrance examination, you may forget subjects that you have already studied. Because you can easily recall the forgotten knowledge, just concentrate your power on a subject you are going to study, and do not concern other subjects. You can classify your work into two groups, a routine work and a creative work. When you have to do a creative one, you may input related information into your brain as much as possible and just wait. You will get the answer or hints in a couple of days. Another important thing to concentrate you thought is to control your emotions and put your negative thoughts away. In summary, the importance of focusing on one thing is the key to achieve anything.

Remember that you generally should not put a comma before using the word "and". There may be some rare instances when you should put a comma efore the word "and", but most of the time you should not.

Your English writing skills are very good, but now that you at an advanced level, one of the things that you can do to improve is to learn how to not write in the "passive" voice. You wrote, "Although almost everyday I watch American dramas without transcripts....". I understand this and techincally it is correct, however it is written in the "passive" voice. I changed it to, " Although I watch American dramas without transcripts almost everyday,...". This is written in the "active" voice because the subject (American dramas) comes first. Again, your writing is good, but one of the next steps is trying to avoid writing in the "passive" voice.

I agree with your assertion that reading the newspaper is a good way to build vocabulary and improve English skills. I always tell my students to read the newspaper if they want to improve their English. I also agree that building vocabulary is essential for improving your English skills. Many people only want to practice English by conversation, but this a mistake.

Overall, you did a good job in this blog. Your English is intelligent, has a nice flow and almost at a native level.

If you have any questions, drop me a line.

What I have to study

There are two ways for learning English: Inputs and outputs. Inputs are reading and listening and outputs contain speaking and writing. Writing something in English may be a good training to improve English skills not only for writing but also for speaking. However, it is not so great for improving input skills. Although I watch American dramas without transcripts almost everyday, progress of my skills to understand English conversation on TV is very little. Even if I watch the same TV drama again and again, I can't understand the words or phases I don't know. So, vocabulary is one of the most important parts to acquire skills for listening and reading is very important to build vocabulary. Newspapers are good texts to study reading, but the words and phrases are considerably different from those in ordinary English conversation. The knowledge of words required for reading or listening English differ depending on the subjects in the texts. Several years ago, I studied textbooks for English conversation and tried to memorize sentences shown in these textbooks. But, I never used most of them. So, we don't need to memorize all of them. To improve English ability for listening, memorizing words used in the subjects and acceleration of the reading speed may lead to improvement of listening ability.

Even though

'Even though' is a very confusing phrase for Japanese people. It looks like 'even if', but their meanings are completely different. 'Even if' means 'if something happens, ......,' but something never happens. The meaning of 'even though' is the same as that of 'although'. I heard that in the podcast program eChat Vancouver (vol. 78), in which the DJ YUKO said that 'although', 'though', and 'even though' had same meanings.

In another volume (vol. 140) of the podcast, YUKO explained the difference between 'although', 'even though', and 'despite'. 'Despite' is a preposition followed by a noun phrase, whereas 'although' and 'even though' make an adverb clause. She showed examples as follows:
Although (or Even though) his wife disapproved, he went to the strip club.
Despite his wife's disapproval, he went to the strip club.

In these cases, 'although' and 'even though' seem to have the same meaning.

Recently, I found the reason why 'even if' and 'even though' confuse us. Many text books for English grammar deal with 'even if' and 'even though' in the same sections. And, many of them do not explain the differences adequately, since they try to explain the meaning of 'even.'

I agree that grammar books can be very confusing and it always seems to be better when a grammar point can be explained with examples. I think it's great that you are listening to the podcast, it will probably help you out a lot! (sarah)

Beginning

While browsing the Internet this afternoon, I was looking for people who correct English sentences that I'm going to write. Writing something in English may be very good for studying English. The only problem is that I don't know if my sentences are correct or not. So, I need someone who helps me to improve my English skills.

I found a web site named otonanoeigo.com in which its owner shows the secret of his method for improving English skills. According to his claim, he was very frustrated three years ago. Although he went to English school in Vancouver and studied very hard, his English skill was hardly improved. Then, he thought again and again of how he can make himself an excellent English speaker; what is the breakthrough to master English?

Finally, he found the key that he was looking for. If you want to be capable of using English, you have to use it! But, the next problem is where you can use English. You don't have any friends who are native speakers of English. The answer is to write something in English. You can write English sentences by yourself anytime, anywhere. Otonanoeigo.com provides services to collect English sentences.

I think that is the answer that I'm looking for, too. So, now I'm writing this blog in English.

I also teach private English lessons and one thing that I always suggest my students do, is keep a journal. The reason I assign or suggest this, is that it DOES help them to think and feel in English. The result is that they become more confident in a speaking situation, which is what anyone learning English wants to accomplish. I think it's great that you are going to try a new method of study. I look forward to reading and helping you with your future blogs. (sarah)
